Ghana Education Service Releases 2026/2027 Academic Calendar for Basic Schools

Management of the Ghana Education Service has formally approved and released the 2026/2027 Academic Calendar for all basic schools (Kindergarten, Primary, and Junior High Schools).

Per the new calendar, schools will reopen on 8th September, 2026, for the start of the new academic year. Term one of the 2026/2027 Academic Calendar for Basic Schools has 15 weeks of schooling. The second term will have only 12 weeks, while term 3 will be 14 weeks. Schools will vacate on 18th December for the first term break.

The second term will start on 5th January, 2027, and end on 25th March, 2027. The third term of the new school years will commence on 20th April, 2027, while the academic year ends on 23rd July, 2027.

Regional Directors are kindly requested to share this information with all Heads of Basic Schools within their respective regions through the metro/municipal and district directors of education.

In a related development, the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) is scheduled to take place from Wednesday, 5th May, to 12th May, 2027.

Management of the Ghana Education Service at the headquarters reminded all stakeholders that public holidays within the academic year are to be observed accordingly. In addition, a two-day mid-term break will be observed in each term for all basic schools.

Management of the Ghana Education Service at regional, metro, municipal, district, and school levels are to take note of these dates and ensure adequate preparation for a smooth and effective academic year.
