Ghana Minister of Education Announces New Initiatives to Improve Teacher Quality
The Ghana Teacher Licensure Examination (GTLE) is a standardized test that all prospective teachers in Ghana must pass in order to be licensed to teach. The GTLE was introduced in 2017 by the National Teaching Council (NTC) in an effort to improve the quality of teaching in Ghana.
The Minister for Education, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, recently gave a press briefing to discuss the GTLE and the government’s plans to improve teacher education in Ghana. He said that the government is committed to ensuring that only qualified tertiary education graduates are licensed to be teachers. He also commended the NTC for its gatekeeping role in ensuring that graduates from education institutions have the right skills and knowledge to teach.
Dr Adutwum announced that the Ministry of Education has set up a seven-member committee to review the GTLE. The committee will look at the extent to which the GTLE is aligned to the National Teachers’ Standard and other supporting policies or frameworks. The committee will also make recommendations on how to improve the GTLE and the selection process for teacher education admission.
The Minister also said that the Ministry of Education is considering introducing an entrance assessment as part of the selection process for teacher education admission. This would help to ensure that only the most qualified students are admitted to teacher education programs.
The government’s commitment to improving teacher education is a positive step towards improving the quality of education in Ghana. The GTLE and the proposed entrance assessment are important tools that can help to ensure that only qualified teachers are teaching in Ghana’s classrooms.
In addition to the government’s efforts, there are also a number of non-governmental organizations and other stakeholders working to improve teacher education in Ghana. These organizations are providing training and support to teachers, and they are also advocating for better working conditions for teachers.
The improvement of teacher education is a complex and challenging task. However, the government’s commitment to this goal is a positive sign for the future of education in Ghana. With the continued efforts of all stakeholders, Ghana can achieve its goal of having a well-educated population that is prepared to compete in the global economy.
