Ghana’s Vice President Recovers
Ghana’s Vice President recovers, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, has returned home following a full recovery from an illness that temporarily kept her out of the public eye. She arrived in Accra from London, where she had been receiving medical care, and was warmly welcomed at Kotoka International Airport by a host of dignitaries and loved ones.
Leading the welcome party were President John Dramani Mahama and First Lady Lordina Mahama, who were joined by Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, and the Vice President’s own Chief of Staff, Alex Segbefia. Several senior government officials, family members, and religious leaders, including the Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church, were also present to greet her.
President Mahama had earlier confirmed the Vice President’s return while speaking during a stop on his ongoing “Thank You Tour” in Dodowa, in the Greater Accra Region, on Friday, May 16.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang’s health concerns first arose on Friday, March 28, 2025, when she fell ill and was admitted to the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) for initial treatment. Following medical advice, she took a formal three-week medical leave starting April 7. As a precaution, she traveled to the United Kingdom for further evaluation and recovery.
Speaking briefly upon her return, the Vice President expressed heartfelt gratitude to Ghanaians for their support and prayers during her absence. She extended her appreciation to the doctors and medical staff at UGMC for their professionalism and care. She also gave special thanks to President Mahama and his brother, Ibrahim Mahama, for their unwavering support and kindness throughout her recovery.

Now back in Ghana and in good health, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang is expected to resume her official duties in the coming days.
