Ghana’s Covid-19 Update for December: Cases on the rise, as adherance to protocols fall

While the Ministry of Health , Ghana Health Service and The Ghana Medical Association continue to work together to make sure the safety of the public, Covid-19 continues to be a threat to the very existence of the Ghanaian people. 

The seems to be a spike in the cases and a continuous rise in the number of active cases in the country. With concerts and entertainment events being organized without any adherence to Covid-19 cases, one can be sure that, the continuous  upward trajectory of covid cases will continue even after the festive season.

The United States donated 1.7 million Pfizer COVID-19 on December 24, 2021 however in the face of all these donations, per the data available on the Ghana Health Service website, Ghana’s cases stand at 3165. Greater Accra remains Ghana’s covid-19 epicenter  with an active case of 2,212 followed by Ashanti region which stands at 264 Active cases according to the GHS statistics online. 321 cases were recorded by the GHS and captured in its latest update. Atittudinal change is critcal to Ghana if we are to win the battle against covid-19.

The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Henry Quartey, has made a declaration that any those who do not wear nose masks shall be denied entry to any public transportation service in the region beginning today, Saturday, December 25, 2021.

With the Christmas and new year festivities starting, Ghanaians need to be extra careful with covid-19 while celebrating. Churches, and other religious gatherings have been very instrumental and law-abiding in ensuring the adherence to covid-19 protocols but the same cannot be said for entertainment centres, and parliament. 

Government’s effort to vaccinate the citizens has been derailed by the lack of interest in the vaccination process by many. Data available to Ghanaeducation.org shows that, only 4% of Ghana’s population have been vaccinated fully as at October 2021 while another just about 11% have taken a shot. This data shows Ghana is behind its own target of vaccinating some 20 million people by the end of the year.

Current data from GHS for December shows that 5,181,763 persons have received one dose of Covid-19 vaccine while 2,005,844 have also ben fully vaccinated.

The Ghana’s Covid-19 cases on the rise means more public education needs to be done to debunk the negativity burried in people’s  minds baout the vaccination if we are to get mre people freely walking out to health centres to be vaccinated.
