GIFEC trains 450 visually-impaired with ICT skills
In a significant step towards digital inclusivity, the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC) has successfully trained 450 visually-impaired individuals in specialized Information Communication and Technology (ICT) skills.
This initiative, part of a broader effort to integrate marginalized communities into the digital world, aims to equip these individuals with the necessary tools to navigate the information-rich online environment.
The training, conducted in partnership with the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) and the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (NORAD), was held under the program “Introduction to Computer Basics for the Visually Impaired (ICBVI).”
Participants were selected from 13 regions and attended sessions at various GIFEC Community ICT Centres (CICs), where they engaged in a three-week intensive course.
The curriculum, designed and implemented by Cisco and stFoundation, covered computer fundamentals and provided the trainees with the ability to manage daily activities, communicate via email, and use social media platforms effectively.

Prince Sefah, the CEO of GIFEC, highlighted the impact of the training at its culmination in Techiman, Bono East Region.
He emphasized how the program not only facilitates access to online educational resources, news, and entertainment but also fosters personal development and independence.
This initiative is a part of GIFEC’s broader strategy to bring digital skills to underserved communities, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to participate in the global digital economy.
Further advancing their mission, GIFEC is working on the Ghana Rural Telephony and Digital Inclusion Project, which aims to establish 2,016 rural telephony sites to improve mobile network connectivity in remote areas.
To date, over half of these sites have been activated, drastically increasing the digital reach compared to previous efforts.
Additionally, the upcoming Ghana Digital Acceleration Project (GDAP) plans to implement Fibre-Connected Free WiFi in 120 CICs, which will be equipped with computers and solar panels to ensure sustainability and reduce dependence on the national grid.
GIFEC’s commitment extends to empowering women and girls through the flagship Girls in ICT Project, which trains thousands in basic ICT and coding, thus preparing them for future careers in technology.
This inclusive approach not only enhances individual capabilities but also contributes to the socio-economic development of Ghana, ensuring that the benefits of technological advancements reach all sections of society.
