Girl who received 16 lashes from teacher, unable to sit again (VIDEO)
A 15-year-old girl received 16 lashes from the teacher and then collapses in class.
She gets rushed to the hospital and is now unable to sit again.
What is the GES doing about the endless abuse of pupils by teachers in our schools?
In today’s modern Ghana, some teachers still resort to unconventional means of instilling discipline in students by using canes to deliver strong and needless lashes which only hurt students and trap the teacher in avoidable trouble.
The Ghana Education Service has banned the use of the cane and corporal punishment, but this teacher has allegedly infringed wounds on the buttocks of the 15-year-old female student, leading to the girl’s inability to even sit.
The sad incident which must not go unpunished by the GES occurred in Half Assini in the Western Region.
Some teachers in Ghana have refused to follow the GES directive on the use of canes and continue to abuse students in the name of discipline. Leadership in both public and private pre-tertiary education institutions are also not doing the best as they entertain canes in their schools and classrooms.
A case related to this is the one reported by The Human Rights Reporter Ghana (HRRG) where teachers of Annor Adjaye SHS mercilessly caned students and hurt them on Mother’s Day all because the students were late for the Sunday Morning church service. As we report this sad incident, the GES has not officially informed the public of what they have done about the issue
It is suspected that the teacher might be interested in the student, hence the use of the cane.
If this allegation turns out to be true, it would even worsen the case of the teacher, as the GES code of conduct kicks against such immoral acts or relationships between the learner and the teacher.
The information available to Ghana Education News shows that the girl reported to a health facility to receive treatment after the barbaric act of the said teacher.
Reacting to the unprofessional and illegal conduct of the teacher, Mr. Francis Bronya, the girl’s father, has revealed that his daughter who has been abused by the teacher is the class prefect at the Christian Academy.
The class prefect was tasked to write the names of students who report to school early, late reporters as well as those who absent themselves every day.
The list of names is then announced the next day during morning assembly and culprits (late students) are punished.
On that faithful day, she was lashed by the teacher, she left the list of names to attend to nature’s call. While away and unknown to her, a colleague, who was not enthused by her name writing, wrote the class prefect’s name as part of those who were late.
Since one of her colleagues came in late and wrote her name without authorization, upon resuming her seat, she asked her colleagues who wrote the name, but she did not receive any response. So she tore the sheet on which the names were written and disposed of it.
The victim’s father said after his daughter resumed her seat, she sent the original list of names to the teacher, whose name was given as Alfred.
Sir Alfred later queried why the sheet had been torn, but none of the pupils responded.
The victim reportedly responded that she did. Teacher Alfred allegedly decided to cane the whole class.
Haven done that, the victim was allegedly invited to the front of the class by the teacher, who went ahead to give her 16 lashes.
The victim is reported to have collapsed and was resuscitated later.

The sisters of the teacher, according to the father, informed him of the development.
Mr Francis Bronya, the father of the victim, says he rushed his daughter to the hospital and later reported the case to the police upon advice from the Doctor in the Half Assini Government Hospital.
He was given a medical form which was signed by the Doctor.
The police invited the teacher who came with the chiefs of the area and was questioned but is yet to be arraigned before court a week after the incident.
When contacted, the District crime officer advised that the reporter contact the region headquarters for further information. However, the regional police also declined to comment.
