Private 2024 BECE candidates will not be examined with Common Core Curriculum
The good news is that all BECE candidates who failed the exam in 2023 and earlier and will retake it in 2024 will receive an examination based on the old curriculum rather than the common core curriculum. Parents who make the mistake of registering their candidates who failed the BECE in 2023 or earlier with a school will be harming their children who never studied the new curriculum.
This decision by the Ghana Education Service, the Ministry of Education, and the West African Examination Council is a step in the right direction.
Prior to the writing of the last official BECE based on the old curriculum, the GES issued a directive that no head teacher should repeat a student who was in JHS2 and was supposed to be in JHS3 to take the BECE in 2023 since such a repetition will affect the student who has been in schools based on the old curriculum.
Since some students received their education and preparation for the BECE from the old curriculum, WAEC will administer a separate examination question to all such candidates who register as private candidates.
Parents are to note that there is a difference between private candidates and private school candidates at the BECE level.
Any candidate registering for the BECE who failed the previous examination, either in 2023 or earlier, is considered a private candidate. It also includes a student who has been attending school at home but is taking the said examination.
While a student at home may take the examination based on the old or new curriculum, depending on which one he or she received schooling and preparation on in the last one or two years, all those who sat and failed one or more subjects administered under the old curriculum are advised to register and take the private BECE.
What this means is that students are preparing for a re-sit of the BECE.
