How AI Can Transform Lesson Notes Writing for Teachers

In a recent conference held by the School of Educational Development and Outreach (SEDO), educators were urged to embrace Artificial Intelligence (AI) to revolutionize their lesson notes planning processes.

Professor Joseph Ghartey Ampiah, former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast (UCC), highlighted the transformative potential of AI in education during his address at the conference themed “Empowering Future Citizens: Innovative Education on the 21st Century.”

Professor Ampiah, who has had a distinguished career in educational leadership, emphasized that AI could dramatically reduce the time teachers spend preparing lesson notes.

“Teachers can leverage AI technology to streamline their lesson planning process. For example, a teacher can instruct AI to develop a lesson plan for a one-hour session on a specific topic, complete with activities. AI can efficiently handle these tasks, reducing preparation time from hours to mere minutes,” he explained.

This significant reduction in preparation time frees up educators to focus more on engaging directly with students and refining their teaching strategies.

Professor Ampiah also pointed out that AI not only enhances the efficiency of lesson planning but also offers vast opportunities to improve learning outcomes, increase access to quality education, and foster innovative teaching methodologies.

The utilization of AI also extends to academic research, where it can help analyze data and generate insights that can be used to enhance societal outcomes.

This integration of AI in education, according to Professor Ampiah, is crucial for equipping future generations with the skills needed in a rapidly evolving technological landscape.

However, the adaptation to AI tools in educational settings is not without its challenges.

During his speech, Professor Ampiah expressed surprise at the resistance from some faculty members towards the use of AI in academic work, such as assignments and project research.

He called for a shift in mindset among educators, advocating for openness to new technologies that can enhance academic integrity and effectiveness.

In a related development, the Ghana Education Service (GES) issued a new directive regarding the submission of lesson notes by teachers.

Addressing a longstanding issue between teachers and school heads, the GES now requires that all heads of schools, both Basic and Second Cycle, accept lesson notes in both handwritten and electronic forms, whether printed or emailed.

This directive aims to clarify misunderstandings and provide flexibility in lesson note submission, accommodating different preferences and capabilities of teachers.

“Regional Directors are to ensure that District/Municipal/Metropolitan Directors of Education communicate this policy effectively, ensuring that all heads of schools accept lesson notes in both handwritten and electronically prepared formats,” the GES stated.

The integration of AI in educational practices and the flexibility in lesson note submissions are part of broader efforts to modernize education in Ghana.

By adopting advanced technologies and accommodating diverse methods of teaching preparation, the educational sector can better serve its mission to empower future citizens for the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century.

This approach not only enhances the teaching process but also prepares students more effectively for the future job market and societal integration.
