University of Cape Coast (UCC) has served a notice to the general public and the university community about their approved and official logo. Some letterheads used by some departments and colleges of the university often use the wrong logo. Let’s take a look at the official and approved logo of UCC.

The Directorate of Public Affairs of the university held a two-day workshop to educate a section of staff on the need to be consistent with the approved letterhead of the University.

Speaking at the event, the Director of the Directorate of Public Affairs, Major Kofi Baah-Bentum (rtd) said, “The reason we are here is to synchronize and make sure that we are all on the same page when it comes to the University letterhead

About UCC

The University of Cape Coast originated in October 1962 as a University College, initially in a close affiliation with the University of Ghana, Legon. It transitioned to an autonomous university on October 1, 1971, gaining the authority to grant its own degrees, diplomas, and certificates through the University of Cape Coast Act, 1971 (Act 390), and subsequently through the University of Cape Coast Law, 1992 (PNDC Law 278).

Presently, there exists a draft Bill aimed at amending the University of Cape Coast Law, 1992 (PNDCL 278) that replaced the University of Cape Coast, Act 1971 (Act 390), the University of Cape Coast (Amendment) Law, 1990 (P.D.C.L. 241), and the University of Cape Coast (Interim Administration Committee) Law, 1990 (P.N.D.C.L. 243), which initially established the University. The expected result of this amendment is a reevaluation of the university’s original mission, aiming to accommodate the training of personnel in diverse disciplines, thereby broadening the institution’s focus.

The University was founded to address the critical requirement for highly qualified educators. Initially, its primary goal was to prepare graduate professional teachers for Ghana’s secondary educational institutions and the Ministry of Education to meet the country’s urgent educational demands. However, with the expansion of faculties and program diversification, the University now caters to the manpower needs of various ministries and industries, beyond solely the Ministry of Education.

Beginning with just two departments, Arts and Science, the institution’s structure evolved, culminating in the establishment of Faculties in 1963. Additional Faculties, namely Education and Economics & Social Studies (now the Faculty of Social Sciences), were created in 1964 to fulfill the institution’s objectives.

The University later introduced the fifth faculty, the School of Agriculture, in 1975. Subsequently, the Faculty of Science was divided into the Schools of Physical and Biological Sciences during the 2002/2003 academic year. Simultaneously, the Department of Business Studies was elevated to the School of Business in the 2003/2004 academic year.
