Meaning of the Black and White in the Achimota School Crest
Achimota School was one of the first co educational Schools built by the European to promote Education in the Colony.
Achimota School formerly known as Prince of Wales college was established on 28th January, 1927 by Sir Frederick Gordon Guggisberg, then Governor of Gold Coast with support from Rev. A. J Fraser as the first Principal and Dr James Kwegyir Aggrey Gold Coast missionary and educationalist as the vice principal
One thing that makes Achimota School different from other schools is their mission and the crest.
Basically the school aimed at educating the total being of boys with girls not just in the academics but to make the best use of the minds and bodies, and have respect for all that is true and of lasting value in the Old African Culture, beliefs and ways of life.
Now what is the meaning of the white and black in the crest of Achimota School?
The symbols in the crest was derived from James Kwegyir Aggrey favourite quote “Black keys of Piano give good sounds, but the intersection of the two gives better melody”
This quotes indicates that is better to practice inclusivity and gender equality in our various educational institutions in order to promote Social well being in y the society.
The Black and White in the crest symbolise that Africans and Europeans can learn together without any interference or intimidation.
The motto of the school “Ut Omnes Unum Sint” which is translate from Latin as ‘That all may be one”, clearly explains that the motto and the crest of the Achimota School is to promote togetherness among every individuals irrespective of their different backgrounds and race.
Simply the crest symbolise unity.
For the past years Achimota College has raised a lot of dignitaries in and out of the country, nortable of them includes; Dr.Kwame Nkrumah the first president of Ghana, Kofi Abrefa Busia, Flt.Lt. Jerry John Rawlings, Professor John Evans Atta Mills and Robert Mugabe Zimbabwe.
When it comes to National Science and Maths Quiz too, Achimota School has won it two consecutive times in the year 1998 and 2004 respectively.
