Following the publication of Africa Education Watch that there is a massive shortage of desks in schools located in the Kpandai Education Directorate in the Northern Region, the Ministry of Education has reacted proactively by initiating the nationwide distribution of furniture to basic schools in need. In all, a little over, 2300 dual desks were dispatched to over 80 basic schools to Kpandai Education Directorate in the Northern Region.
According to the Africa Education Watch, the country needs not less than I.3 million desks to help ensure learners have adequate desks for learning. It had earlier called on the MoE to harness support for desks and stop relying on the usual procurement approaches, which will not yield the desired results in record time. It further called for an inclusive, community-led approach that offers stakeholders including PTAs, DAs, RCC’s, FC, CSOs, and Traditional & Religious bodies to resolve the deficit of desks for learners in basic schools.
The Ministry of Education has indicated that the dispatch of the 2300 dual desk to over 80 basic schools in Kpandai Education Directorate in the Northern Region was in line with Government’s effort to provide basic needs and amenities to public schools and also to improve quality education in Ghana.
In a related development, Hon Jerry Akporhor, Founder & Lead Educator at Informed Teachers Network and a Fellow at Educate Africa Institute who doubles as a teacher have complained about the lack of attention given to the classroom conditions of basic schools in the country. In a Facebook post sighted by GhanaEducation.org, Mr. Akporhor disclosed that his class of 65 learners could only boast of 5 dual desks, 5 mono desks, and three kitchen stools and tables.
A lot of media attention and accolades, but it appears not to be having the same level of impact in our classrooms.
I have 65 students in my class currently with 15 dual desks, 5 mono desks, and three kitchen stools and tables. The children brought the mono desks and kitchen stools to the school by themselves. I have to go scouting for benches for them to sit on. My class is just one out of six at the primary. If we do the mathematics….
Just look at how they are struggling to write on the benches and being three in a dual desk.
