MTN postpones new data prices: Best option if MTN data prices go up

Why MTN announced it was going to increase the cost of data for its customers, only to postpone new data prices for its estimated 3.1 million subscribers in Ghana, has left many wondering when the increment will take effect. But the good news is that should the price go up, customers have alternatives they can switch to.
The announced increase in data prices was a worrying update received by its customers, many of whom have other phone numbers with other Telcos in Ghana. This meant that an upward review in the data prices by MTN will not have so much impact on customers who have the luxury of opting for data from either Vodafone or AirtelTigo. The fact that the users of MTN have viable alternatives means they may switch to any of the two other substitutes for data services.
Such a move would mean reduced use of its data services by its customers. With the competitive nature of the prices offered by the other networks, MTN would be at the losing end if they go ahead with the upward review of data prices without any value addition or improved value for money.
To cut matters short, MTN has decided to let sleeping dogs lie by not charging the new data rates which were to take effect on Monday 14th November 2022.
The current situation faced by all the Telcos shows that we are in the customers market and service providers cannot take them for granted since the clients of every Telco company may have networks that serve as alternative sources of internet data and voice calls.
Should MTN finally review its prices, it should expect a massive exodus of users from its data services to Vodafone and AirtelTigo.
MTN Ghana is the largest company in Ghana by market capitalization.
Customers have been getting ready to switch their data services from MTN to alternative sources ahead of the postponement announced by MTN today.
