Naira Marley Summoned Over Mohbad’s Royalties
Naira Marley Summoned Over Mohbad’s Royalties: The House of Representatives has taken a significant step by summoning the controversial Nigerian singer, Azeez Fashola, popularly known as Naira Marley. This move is part of a broader effort to secure compensation and royalties for the late singer, Ilerioluwa Aloba, known as Mohbad, for his musical contributions.
Naira Marley, whose real name is Azeez Fashola, and Jiggy Adeoye, the manager of the late singer Mohbad, have been invited by the House’s Committee on Justice, Youth, and Legislative Compliance to participate in an interactive session scheduled for Tuesday, October 31.
Mohbad, a former signee of Naira Marley’s record label, tragically passed away at the age of 27 under unclear circumstances on September 12.
The House of Representatives decided to intervene in this matter after adopting a motion put forward by Babajimi Benson, a member of the House representing Lagos. Benson’s motion called for a review of the laws governing the entertainment industry, as well as copyright laws. He expressed concerns about the contracts and agreements that entertainers are often compelled to sign.
During the debate on this issue at the plenary session, lawmakers expressed their commitment to securing proper compensation and royalties for Mohbad’s musical works, assuring his family of their dedication to this cause.
In a letter dated October 26, 2023, and signed by Barrister Yusuf Ibrahim, the Committee’s Clerk, the House extended invitations to both Naira Marley and Mohbad’s manager to participate in an interactive meeting. This meeting is in response to a resolution of the House of Representatives and is intended to investigate the circumstances surrounding the royalties and other benefits owed to Mohbad. The aim is to ascertain the level of interaction with relevant copyright organizations and guide the committee’s further legislative actions.
The letter, which was routed through the President of the Performing Musicians Associations of Nigeria (PMAN), reads in part, “The House Committee on Justice, Youth, and Legislative Compliance invites you and the legal team of MOHBAD for an interactive meeting session as regards a referral received being a resolution of the House of Representatives during their plenary session on Tuesday, 26th September 2023.”
This legislative action by the House of Representatives reflects a commitment to addressing the complexities of the entertainment industry, contracts, and copyright issues. The scheduled interaction on October 31, 2023, is expected to shed light on the circumstances surrounding Mohbad’s royalties and benefits, serving as a step towards justice for the late singer and his family.
