New: Private JHS Students Moving to Public JHS for BECE Not Eligible for Public SHS Placement

Private JHS students who move to Public JHS for BECE purposes will no longer be considered as public school candidates in SHS placement.

In a historic meeting between the Ghana National Council of Private Schools (GNACOPS) and the Minister of Education on November 13, 2023, private school leaders celebrated the achievement of two transformative agreements.

Firstly, students transitioning from private junior schools to public schools for the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) will no longer be considered public school students for Senior High School (SHS) placement, a move aimed at ensuring compliance with WAEC’s regulations.

The Ghana National Association of Private Schools (GNAPS) ahead of this year’s school placement has called on the Ministry of Education to cancel the 30% second cycle school (SHS) placement policy for public Junior High School BECE students.

Furthermore, a significant triumph for inclusivity was marked as low-cost private schools are now eligible for the 30 percent affirmative policy. This means some private schools will be considered and their students will be placed in Free SHS using the government’s 30% policy, which has favoured public schools since 2017.

This groundbreaking decision emphasises the commitment to providing equal opportunities in education.

Looking ahead, a comprehensive list of affected students and low-cost private schools will be submitted to the Ministry of Education, ensuring a seamless implementation of these agreements.

The Minister of Education has called on all private schools to stand by for further instructions as they collectively navigate this transformative moment in education.

These agreements herald a new era of collaboration and inclusivity in the educational landscape.
