I have taken steps in expansion of the Ghana Armed Forces – President Akufo-Addo.

In a bid to fortify Ghana’s defense and safeguard the nation from potential threats, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has underscored his government’s significant investments in the Ghana Armed Forces. During the Ghana Military Academy 2023 graduation parade in Accra on Friday, November 17, 2023, the President emphasized the crucial role of a well-equipped military in ensuring national security.

Addressing the audience, President Akufo-Addo revealed recent measures taken to expand the Ghana Armed Forces, approving the establishment of various institutions and units. These include the National College of Defence Studies, 12 Mechanized Battalion Units, and the Sargent Major’s Academy. Additionally, directorates such as military records and public relations have been elevated to the status of departments. Notably, the Air Force Support Services Brigade Group in Burma Camp and the Armed Forces Medical Corps have undergone expansion.

Moreover, the President disclosed his approval for the establishment of key entities, namely the Ghana Armed Forces Central Band, Armed Forces Musical School, Armed Forces Fire Service, School of Ordinance, and the Artillery Training School. These additions, following a thorough review, are expected to enhance the capabilities of the Armed Forces, equipping them to effectively address contemporary threats both within and outside the country.

President Akufo-Addo reiterated his administration’s commitment to counteracting terrorism, particularly in the northern parts of Ghana. Recognizing the imminent threats, he emphasized the establishment of forward operating and logistics bases along the entire northern border. Contracts for the construction of 12 forward operating bases and three logistics bases have been awarded to strengthen security measures in response to potential threats emanating from neighboring countries.

The graduation ceremony witnessed the participation of 292 cadets, including two allied cadets from the Republic of Guinea. Mount Mary Old Students Demand Answers Over Reposting of 9 Teachers.

The alumni association and concerned staff members of Mount Mary Demonstration Roman Catholic (R/C) Junior High School in the Lower Manya Krobo municipality, Eastern Region, are calling for the reinstatement of nine reposted teachers. The demand comes in the wake of what has been described as the use of influence-peddling by the school’s headmaster, Christian Mensah, leading to the transfer of old staff members who sought accountability for collected funds.

In a statement, Mount Mary Demonstration Old Students Association (MOMADOSA) expressed concern over the sudden reposting of nine academic staff members, leading to understaffing issues. President of MOMADOSA, Dr. Gideon Tetteh, outlined a series of issues in a petition titled ‘Bring Back the Nine Reposted Teachers,’ highlighting alleged illegal charges, misuse of Parent Teacher Association (PTA) dues, and embezzlement.

The petition claims that the headmaster charged fees not in line with Ghana Education Service (GES) policy and misused PTA dues. Allegedly, levies for projects like Information Communication Technology (ICT) and a pavilion lacked corresponding developments. Furthermore, the headmaster is accused of charging unauthorized admission fees, daily fees from canteen vendors, and personal gains from the sale of report cards and crests.

The fallout between the teachers and the headmaster began when some members requested an account of levies collected at a PTA meeting. In response, the headmaster failed to provide the requested accounts. Angered by the lack of accountability, the headmaster threatened to transfer the teachers. Consequently, all nine teachers were reposted effective October 26, 2023.

Two of the transferred teachers, speaking anonymously, challenged the rationale behind the reposting, stating that the Labour Act allows for transfers after five years if services are needed elsewhere but isn’t mandatory. They also lamented the extortion and embezzlement of funds in the school.

The transfer’s impact has led to a halt in academic activities at the school. MOMADOSA, in its petition, sees this as an attempt to tarnish the school’s name and hinder academic performance. The alumni association demands answers and the reinstatement of the reposted teachers, urging parents not to withdraw their wards from the school.

In response, the headmaster denied influencing the teachers’ transfer but declined to comment on embezzlement charges without approval from the municipal director of education. The director of education explained that the reshuffling of teachers aims to improve academic performance in the municipality, addressing concerns about the impact on Mount Mary.

The Campaign Against Privatisation and Commercialisation of Education (CAPCOE) stated that transferring teachers who have served more than five years isn’t illegal but suggested negotiating to maintain teaching integrity and discipline, urging stakeholder engagement with the Parish Priest, regional manager of Catholic Schools, and the municipality’s Director of Education.

Of particular note is the involvement of Africa Legal Associates, the law firm co-founded by New Patriotic Party (NPP) stalwart and cousin of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko. The choice of this law firm has raised eyebrows, with some, including vice chairman of IMANI Africa, Bright Simons, suggesting that the lawsuit hints at an attempt to “create, loot, and share” the country’s resources. Simons alleged that the suit was filed after an initial attempt to settle the judgment debt on the case failed.

Copies of the court document shared by Bright Simon reveal that West Blue is seeking two alternative sets of reliefs from the government. The first set includes four recoveries totaling over GH¢300 million plus interest and other payments, while the second set encompasses a recovery sum of US$425,000, interest payment, damages, and the cost of arbitration.

Wildlife Officers on a Quest to Locate Missing Buffalo in Walewale.

In an unusual turn of events, a female buffalo has gone missing in the West Mamprusi Municipality of the North East Region after invading the premises of Walewale Senior High Technical School. The wild animal, which appeared unfamiliar in a mix of domestic cattle, entered the school campus on Thursday, November 16, 2023, catching residents off guard.

The buffalo’s invasion occurred at 4 AM, prompting dogs to bark and signal the presence of the animal. Despite the early awareness, the buffalo managed to escape from the school campus as crowds gathered to catch a glimpse of the unusual visitor. It sprinted through Walewale township to Kperiga, leaving residents unable to trace its whereabouts.

Joseph Binlinla, the Upper East Regional wildlife manager, has taken swift action by dispatching personnel from the wildlife office in Bolgatanga to search for the missing buffalo. Atarikiya Kojo Adita, the wildlife corridors manager, provided insight into their efforts, stating, “We are on the ground searching for it. We are still mounting a search seriously for it, and we have not yet seen it, but we hope to locate it with the help of one of the community members.”
