Wildlife officers seek missing buffalo in Walewale
Wildlife Officers on a Quest to Locate Missing Buffalo in Walewale.
In an unusual turn of events, a female buffalo has gone missing in the West Mamprusi Municipality of the North East Region after invading the premises of Walewale Senior High Technical School. The wild animal, which appeared unfamiliar in a mix of domestic cattle, entered the school campus on Thursday, November 16, 2023, catching residents off guard.
The buffalo’s invasion occurred at 4 AM, prompting dogs to bark and signal the presence of the animal. Despite the early awareness, the buffalo managed to escape from the school campus as crowds gathered to catch a glimpse of the unusual visitor. It sprinted through Walewale township to Kperiga, leaving residents unable to trace its whereabouts.

Joseph Binlinla, the Upper East Regional wildlife manager, has taken swift action by dispatching personnel from the wildlife office in Bolgatanga to search for the missing buffalo. Atarikiya Kojo Adita, the wildlife corridors manager, provided insight into their efforts, stating, “We are on the ground searching for it. We are still mounting a search seriously for it, and we have not yet seen it, but we hope to locate it with the help of one of the community members.”

Adita explained that they had lost track of the buffalo’s footprints along the way, emphasizing the ongoing efforts to track it in the specified direction. He urged residents in the North East Region not to harm the animal but instead to provide information about its whereabouts. Suspecting that the buffalo originated from the Gambaga scarp area in the East Mamprusi Municipality, the wildlife corridors manager emphasized the importance of cooperation from the community.
It’s worth noting that this incident follows the killing of two elephants in Wungu and Yankazia in the West Mamprusi and East Mamprusi Municipalities, respectively, between 2020 and 2021. These unfortunate events highlight the complex coexistence between wildlife and communities, emphasizing the need for proactive measures to ensure the safety of both animals and residents. The search for the missing buffalo underscores the dedication of wildlife officers to protect and preserve Ghana’s diverse wildlife population.
