NPP Presidential Race Heats Up: Bawumia Leads, Agyapong Gains Momentum
As the New Patriotic Party (NPP) primaries edge closer, a recent survey conducted by Global Info Analytics sheds light on the evolving dynamics of the presidential race. Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is currently the front-runner, but Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, has been steadily gaining momentum in terms of support.
The survey, which involved 4,311 NPP delegates from all 275 constituencies and took place between October 2nd and 11th, reveals that Dr. Bawumia is leading the race with a substantial 43.5% of delegate support. However, the real twist in the tale is the remarkable surge in backing for Kennedy Agyapong, who now secures 23.5% of delegates’ support, making him a formidable contender.
While Dr. Bawumia maintains his position as the candidate to beat, the growing popularity of Kennedy Agyapong suggests that the race may be more fiercely contested than initially anticipated. Notably, a significant 18.3% of delegates are yet to make up their minds, underscoring the pivotal role of an intense campaign effort in the outcome of the primaries.
In Dr. Bawumia’s stronghold, the Northern Region, he commands over 70% support, but in the Central, Western, and Volta regions, Ken Agyapong is posing a strong challenge, with both candidates running neck and neck.
The battle in crucial swing regions, particularly Greater Accra, will be instrumental in determining the ultimate winner. Currently, Bawumia holds a lead in Accra with 37% support, compared to Agyapong’s 13%. However, with a substantial 31% of delegates still undecided, the race in Greater Accra remains wide open.
In the first round of the NPP’s primaries, known as the Super Delegates Conference, Dr. Bawumia secured a commanding lead with 629 votes, equating to a formidable 68.15% of the total votes. Kennedy Agyapong followed closely with 132 votes, constituting 14.30% of the vote.

As the November primaries draw near, both front-runners are gearing up for a final push to win over undecided delegates and fortify their support bases. The party members are eagerly anticipating an electrifying and highly competitive showdown between these two prominent figures.
Whichever candidate emerges victorious will face the arduous task of leading the NPP to success in the 2024 elections while contending with a resurgent National Democratic Congress (NDC). The political landscape in Ghana is set to be invigorated by the upcoming NPP primaries and the subsequent race towards the 2024 general elections.
