The National Teaching Council (NTC), in accordance with the Education Regulatory Bodies Act 2020 (ACT 1023), assumes the pivotal role of regulating the teaching profession within Ghana. A crucial aspect of its regulatory duties is the administration of licensing examinations for individuals aspiring to pursue a career in teaching.

The Licensing Examination, a cornerstone of the NTC’s regulatory functions, serves a dual purpose. Firstly, it provides a pathway for qualified teachers to obtain a professional license. This licensing mechanism is essential to ensure that educators possess the requisite minimum knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes stipulated by the National Teachers’ Standards. The overarching goal is to equip teachers adequately, enabling them to deliver effective education within school settings.
Eligibility
1. Candidates Re-sitting Traditional Exam
Individuals who previously undertook the traditional Ghana Teacher Licensure Examination, covering Essential Professional Skills, Literacy, and Numeracy, are eligible to register for a re-sit. This opportunity allows those who were unsuccessful in certain papers to attempt the examination again, providing a chance for improvement and success.
2. Prospective DBE Holders:
Aspiring professional teachers holding a Diploma in Basic Education (DBE) are encouraged to register for the Licensing Examination. This inclusive approach broadens access to those with foundational qualifications, fostering a diverse pool of educators.
In essence, the NTC’s meticulous approach to the Licensing Examination reflects its commitment to maintaining high standards within the teaching profession. By facilitating a comprehensive assessment, the council ensures that licensed teachers possess the multifaceted competencies essential for effective educational delivery in Ghana.
