Today in History : On October 12,1988 PNDC establishes the judicial council
Exactly 35 years ago on 12th October 1988,the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC) a military junta led by Flt.Lt. Jerry John Rawlings established the Judicial Council to promote justice and combat corruption in the country.
Per their implementation,the council should be chair by the Chief Justice of Ghana,with representatives from other government agencies such as police service, Attorney General Department and the Ghana Bar Association.
Setting up a Judicial Council was one of the core aim of the PNDC to ensure free and fair, equality and justice in the country.
The Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC) empowered the Judicial Council to prevent Corruption of any nature and promote promote well being of every Citizen with good judgement.
The Judicial Council became an independent organ without any interference from any political movement either the PNDC movements which seti up.
The functions of the Judiciary council were
Interpretation of Law: It was the key responsibility of the judiciary organ of the government led by the Chief Justice with other Lawyers to interpret the law governing the country to the understanding of the citizens.
Where there is a case before the law court, it is the mandate of the judicial council to find applicable facts to back the case in order to settle it.
Law making was one the reasons why the council was established by the PNDC to administer. The judiciary makes laws to ensures each and everyone is being prevented from any kind of assault that aimed at causing harm and preventing the citizens from enjoying their fundamental human rights.
Whiles the country was under a military rule, measures and laws were implemented to protect the people.
The judicial council also set up to settle disputes that arouse between group of people in the country, people who found guilty of engaging in any criminal activities were punishment.
The Provisional National Defence Council was formed by Flt.Lt. Jerry John Rawlings following the 31st December,1981 coup. The PNDC started it operations by requesting total participation of citizens governing the state and encouraging public opinions to be addressed.
The PNDC made it known that if any government fail to eradicate corruption, then there is no justification for existence of such government.
