Ahead of the finals of the 2023 NSMQ, slated for October 31, 2023, Prempeh College sues the NSMQ and is seeking an injunction to prevent the 2023 grand finale between Achimota School, Opoku Ware School, and Presec Boys Secondary, Legon.
Prempeh College lost the semi-final painfully to Opoku Ware School and has sued Prime Time, the organisers of the 30-year-old science and math quiz for Senior High Schools in Ghana.
The contest that brought about the controversy and disagreement ended as follows.
End of Contest:
Opoku Ware School: 38pts
Pope John SHS & Min.Sem: 36pts
Prempeh College: 36pts
Prempeh College has filed a lawsuit against the National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) organizers over their elimination from the semi-finals by Opoku Ware SHS. The lawsuit alleges that the NSMQ organizers made a number of unfair and biased decisions that resulted in Prempeh College’s elimination.
Another allegation in the lawsuit is that the NSMQ organisers made a number of unfair rulings during the competition. For example, Prempeh College claims that the organisers allowed Opoku Ware SHS to answer a question incorrectly, but then awarded them the points anyway. Prempeh College also claims that the organizers gave Opoku Ware SHS extra time to answer a question, even though they had already run out of time.
Prempeh College is seeking a number of things in their lawsuit. First, they are seeking a declaration that their elimination from the NSMQ was unfair and invalid. Second, they are seeking an injunction to prevent the NSMQ organizers from announcing the winner of the competition until the lawsuit has been resolved.
The outcome of this lawsuit is still uncertain if the court will grant the request. However, if Prempeh College is successful, it could have a significant impact on the future of the NSMQ. It could also lead to changes in the way that other academic competitions are conducted.
Below is the Injunction Suit.
