President Nana Addo Welcome National Maths & Science Quiz Winner And Other Dignitaries On Various Occasions.
President Nana. Addo Dankwah Akuffo Addo Welcomed The 2022 National Maths and Science Quiz Winners.
On Monday, 19th December 2022, I welcomed the 2022 winners of the National Science and Math’s Quiz Competition, Presbyterian Boys’ Senior High School, to Jubilee House. As an Honourary ɔdadeɛ, I also share in this success, for they were the first Senior High School in Ghana to confer such an honor on me. Winning their seventh title means they are now the undisputed kings of the National Science and Maths Quiz Competition.
Later in the day, we also celebrated two hundred (200) young people, who have worked assiduously to complete the prescribed activities of the Head of State Award Programme. I applauded the remarkable innovation, achievements, impact and lives of these persons who have, for the past few years, brought laurels and pride to the country.
President Nana Addo Dankwah Akuffo Addo Delivered An Address At Ga Presbytery.
On Sunday, 18th December 2022, I delivered an address at the centenary celebration of the Ga Presbytery of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana.
I indicated to the congregation that, with appropriate policy, determination and hard work on the part of Government, things are beginning to turn around. What seemed impossible yesterday is now becoming possible. We are definitely not out of the woods yet. However, today, the cedi is rapidly appreciating against the US dollar and all major currencies, making up for its losses, and the prices of petroleum products are reducing at the pump.
The strengthening of the cedi has not happened by chance, but through the implementation of deliberate policies by Government, in collaboration with the Bank of Ghana. These include cedi liquidity tightening measures, resulting in the offloading of forex, as a store of value, by speculators; the improvement of forex flows from remittances and the mining sector; and the reaching of a staff level agreement with the IMF for a US$3 billion package.
All of these have combined to bring the cedi to an improved position, and I can assure you that Government will continue to work hard to maintain and sustain the gains made. Indeed, in the weeks ahead, the Bank of Ghana will continue with the purchases of forex from the mining and oil sectors to enhance liquidity supply to the market; continue with the single, unified forex forward auction and some modest targeted bilateral support to critical imports; and the implementation of the gold for oil swap transaction, which will significantly remove forex pressures on the cedi.
His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwah Akuffo Addo Delivered An Address At African and Diasporan Young Leaders Forum.
On Tuesday, 13th December 2022, I delivered an address at the Closing Plenary of the African and Diasporan Young Leaders Forum held as part of the ongoing US-Africa Leaders’ Summit, currently ongoing in Washington D.C, in the United States of America.
I urged young African and Diasporan leaders to work to help change the African narrative, which has been characterized largely by a concentration on disease, hunger, poverty and illegal mass migration. Let us all remember that the destiny of all black people, no matter where they are in the world, is bound up with Africa. We should never forget that famous admonition of the celebrated Jamaican reggae star, Peter Tosh, when he said: “Don’t care where you come from. As long as you’re a black man, you’re an African.”
We must help make Africa the place for investment, progress and prosperity, and not from where our youth flee in the hope of accessing the mirage of a better life in Europe, Asia or the Americas. That is what “Beyond the Return” seeks to do, so we can derive maximum dividends from our relations with the diaspora in mutually beneficial co-operation, and as partners for shared growth and development.
His Excellnecy Nana Addo Dankwah Akuffo Addo Visited Takoradi In The Western Region.
On Thursday, 8th December 2022, I was in Takoradi, capital of the Western Region, for four good reasons – firstly to commission a new state-of-the art Dry Bulk Terminal; secondly to commission the Atlantic Terminal Services (ATS) Container and Multipurpose Terminal; thirdly to cut the sod for the construction of an Oil and Gas Services Terminal; and lastly to launch Prime Meridian Dock (PMD) Company’s Floating Dry-dock.
Government is determined to improve maritime trade, and position it as a major economic growth engine. The Port of Takoradi was conceived mainly because its initiators thought it was an ideal location for the export of raw materials with which this region is endowed.
But, as I have said on many occasions, the idea that we can project our development goals on the production and export of raw materials, and still think we can rid ourselves of the shackles of under development and poverty, is not a well-grounded one.
The benefits of these projects are considerable. The enhanced cargo and container handling capacity of the Port will trigger improved service delivery, and lower tariffs to the advantage of the Ghanaian and West African economies. It will, ultimately, ensure a competitive environment for maritime trade.
His Excellency The President Of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwah Akuffo Addo Commissioned The Afienya Road Over Bridge on The Tema-Mpakadan Railway Project.
On Tuesday, 6th December 2022, I commissioned the Afienya Road over Bridge on the Tema-Mpakadan Railway Line Project.
The project, a brainchild of the first NPP Government of 2001 – 2009, when the highly respected Christopher Ameyaw Akumfi was Minister for Harbours and Railways, was conceived to create a multimodal transportation network, involving road, rail and lake transportation, which will facilitate the haulage of cargo and the movement of people from the southern part of the country to the northern sector, through a mix of intermodal transport systems.
I also had the opportunity to inspect some of the ongoing works at the Afienya Railway Station, as well as the works on the track, and I was very happy with the progress made so far. I also proceeded to inspect the Volta Rail Bridge over the Volta River to assess the status of work. I have been assured by the contractor that the few outstanding works remaining on the project will be completed and the project handed over to Government for operations within the first half of next year.
The Tema-Mpakadan-Buipe multi-modal transport project, when successfully completed and operationalised, will link the Tema Port to the lake transport network, especially the north-south movement over a distance of some four hundred kilometres, and open up the Lake to the transportation of not only fuel and cement, but also containerized cargo and agricultural produce from the northern enclave and Afram Plains to the Port of Tema and other destinations.
President Nana Addo Dankwah Akuffo Addo Attended 70th Anniversary At Opoku Ware Senior High School.
On Saturday, 3rd December 2022, I attended the 70th Anniversary Celebration of Opoku Ware Senior High School.
Undoubtedly, one of the best Senior High Schools in Ghana, the name of this school evokes naturally the memory of that great warrior King of Asante, Okatakyie Opoku Ware I, who succeeded and consolidated the gains of his uncle, Opemsuo Osei Tutu I, and helped expand Asanteman to her greatness and fame. We take pride in his name, and that of all the great kings of the Osei Poku Oyoko Dynasty, including the latest descendant, the outstanding Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, who have done so much to bring renown and glory to our nation and its history.
I congratulated management, past and present, teaching and non-teaching staff, and students for their roles in bringing Opoku Ware School this far. The can-do-spirit that saw to the birth of the school, laced with fortitude and dignity, in the face of inevitable challenges, embodies the Ghanaian spirit that we must continue to nurture in order to realise our full potential as a nation.
