Private Schools Protest 2026 Exam BECE Fee Increase and Demand Reversal

GNAPS Demands Immediate Reversal of 2026 BECE Registration Fee Increase for Private Schools.
The Ghana National Association of Private Schools is calling on WAEC to cancel the new BECE registration fee. The 2026 fee has increased from GHC 282.35 to GHC 350.82. The association says the 24.24 percent increase is harsh and unfair to parents.
GNAPS released a statement on December 11, 2025. The group described the fee adjustment as insensitive and unilateral. It said the decision threatens the education of many students in private schools.

General Secretary Kennedy Donkor said the new fee will limit access to education. He believes many parents will struggle to pay the new amount. He warned that the increase could push students out of school.
He said WAEC should pause the fee change and begin wider consultations. He added that any new fee must be fair and agreed on by all groups.
Association Calls for Government Intervention
GNAPS wants the Ministry of Education to step in. It also wants the Parliamentary Education Committee to review WAEC’s decision. The association says the fee increase does not reflect the current economic indicators. It insists inflation and the cost of living have stabilized.
Mr. Donkor said the increase cannot be defended economically. He believes the decision weakens efforts to support basic education.
