The new Reopening date & 2023/2024 Academic Calendar to be released by the Ghana Education Service will further usher academic activities back into the original school year calendar which was used in Ghana prior to the infamous COVID-19 pandemic.
These projections have been made based on the 2019/2020 academic calendar, which was disrupted by Covid-19.
Before the pandemic, every new academic year started in September and ended in August the next year. The Ghana Education Service and The Ministry of Education are yet to come out with the official 2023/2024 Academic Calendar. However, the GES has announced the reopening date for schools.
Per the announcement made by the GES, the first term of the 2023/2024 Academic Calendar/Year starts on October 3rd, 2023.
Projected 2023/2024 Academic Calendar – Important Date and Months
- Schools reopen for term 1 on October 3rd, 2023.
- Term 1 will end in December 2023 on or before 21st December 2023
- The second term is projected to start on or before 9th January 2024
- Since Good Friday in 2024 is March 29, 2024, schools are more likely to vacate after Easter breaks in early April. The vacation day/date is projected to fall on 11th April 2024 for most schools
- Term 3 is also projected to start on 30th April or 7th May 2024, depending on the schools. Often, public schools reopen ahead of most private schools.
- The vacation date for the Third term is projected to be either the 1st or 8th of August 2024.

Projected date for 2024 BECE
What is the projected 2024 BECE date for candidates?
In 2024, the first BECE under the new curriculum introduced in 2019 will be written.
It is projected that WAEC will administer the 2024 BECE from Monday, June 10th to Friday, June 14th, 2024 across the country if the candidates are to sit for not more than 9 subjects. Note that the GES has introduced two new subjects Career Technology and Creative Arts & Design. It is not currently clear how many subjects will be administered to BECE candidates. If the subjects increase to 10, the examination will be administered in 5 days with the last two papers being written on Friday.
