Road Map To Hiring A New Black Stars Coach: GFA Likely To Fail Us Again
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has released a road map indicating its attempt to hire a new coach and successor to Chris Houghton, who was fired right after a poor showing and group stage exit of the 2023 AFCON.
While finding a new coach is a prudent decision, the fear of many Ghanaians is that the GFA will fail to do the right thing and end up hiring another coach who will come and fail.
Ghana football and the Ghana Black stars under the leadership of GFA Presisent Kurt Okreku has failed to impress and the development of Ghana football is taking a deep. Since GFA Presisent Kurt Okreku was elected, he has axed four head coaches of the National Senior Men’s team yet, there has not been any positive and heart warming results.
The Ghana Black Stars need a coach with experience and pedigree who can help redeem the team from the ashes. The five-member committee, led by Vice President of the Ghana Football Association, Mark Addo, is responsible for making the right choice for Ghana.
Hiring a new Black Stars coach will only be a small fraction of the solution to the current problem. If Ghana fails to get the right manager for the team, the chances that Ghana will not make it to the 2026 FIFA World Cup and AFCON will be very high. If the way players are selected for the Black Stars is not made very transparent, the troubles the team has faced will be there. If the current captain of the Black Stars remains a member of the team, the challenges will be there. There have been issues surrounding his captainship and current form.
Prior to the appointment of Chris Houghton, there were counter-suggestions that the just-sacked coach was not the right person to handle the team; however, there were arguments that Ghana could not hire great coaches such as Herve Renard.
Given the criteria outlined for the committee by the GFA, Herve Renard could be the best man for the job, although he currently has a contract with the French women’s national theme until the end of August 2024.
Ghana will unfortunately need a manager to handle the Black Stars for the next 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Mali on June 3rd and against the Central African Republic on June 10th. With Ghana currently 4th in the 2026 World Cup qualifying table in Group I, an experienced coach is urgently needed to reshape the team to win the next two outings if the chances to make it to the World Cup are to be realised.

According to the GFA, whoever the committee deems fit to handle the Ghana Black Stars must meet the following criteria:.
A detailed job description for the head coach position with the Black Stars will be published soon. However, an abbreviated version of the criteria for the selection of the next head coach is as follows:
1. The potential head coach should be a proven winner in coaching the top men’s national National Team or club football.
2. We must have a football philosophy that aligns with or complements our DNA.
3. Must hold the highest football licence in the world with over 15 years of coaching experience.
4. Proven track record in team reconstruction, organisation, and development of young talent
5. Proven disciplinarian, tactician, and leadership skills
The search committee has three weeks to recommend the next Black Stars coach to the Executive Council for approval.
The full list of the five-member search committee to evaluate and recommend a coach candidate to the Executive Council for approval is as follows:
The search committee will be chaired by Vice President Mark Addo of the Ghana Football Association. Legal practitioner and law lecturer Ace Ankomah (Esq.) will act as Vice Chairman of the search committee, with Director of Coaching Education of the GFA, Professor Joseph Kwame Mintah, Ghana football legend Opoku Nti, and William Caesar Kartey, Chief Director of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, as members.
Hiring A New Black Stars Coach, changing how we manage the team, selecting the right players based on merit and without infleunce from so called football people and developing Ghana’s grassroot football will get Ghana to the top again.
