Schools Resume Today For Full Academic Work After COLA Strike
Public pre-tertiary school teaching and non-teaching staff will resume full academic work today, 18th July 2022 after calling off the Cost of Living Allowance (COLA) strike on July 14th. The strike was called off a few minutes after a crunch emergency negotiation meeting with the government, which led to the approval of a 15% COLA.
Pre-tertiary education unions (GNAT, NAGRAT, TEWU, and CCT-GH) embarked on their nationwide strike on 4th July after the government failed to meet the 30th June deadline.
Final negotiations between the government and organized labour led to a 15% COLA to be paid from July to December 2022.
“Management has taken note of the successful completion of negotiations between GoG and Organized Labour on the Cost of Living Allowance (COLA) leading to the call-off of the strike by the Pre-Tertiary Education workers Union.” The statement from the GES noted.
The Ghana Education Service (GES) in the communiqué directed that following the successful negotiation of COLA and the calling off, of the industrial action by the teacher unions, all teaching and non-teaching staff are to report to work today 18th July for full academic work to commence. It further called on all Regional and District Directors of Education to ensure their staff report to work.
“Management, therefore, informs all Regional and District Directors of Education to ensure both teaching and non-teaching staff of the Service return to school on Monday 18th July 2022 to start full academic work.” The GES said in its statement posted on its official Facebook page.
The two weeks industrial strike which brought teaching and learning to a halt instantaneously has affected final-year Junior and Senior High School students who are preparing for their BECE and WASSCE for school candidates. The resumption of teaching and learning in schools is expected to help bridge the gap and get candidates back on track with their preparation.
