Three scientists win Nobel Prize for chemistry for ‘ingenious’ molecule-building tool per the news coming in. The joint winners are Carolyn R. Bertozzi, Morten Meldal and K. Barry Sharpless.
The award is being conferred on the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences said in Stockholm for their achievement in the field of science (Chemistry).
The three Nobels are receiving this ward which is the prize for medicine and physics. The winners were made public on Monday and Tuesday.
The academy said laureates were being recognised for the development of click chemistry and bioorthogonal chemistry. According to Stanford University professor Carolyn Bertozzi, click chemistry has been applied to living organisms for the first time, resulting in novel bioorthogonal reactions that do not interfere with the cell’s normal chemistry. The bioorthogonal chemistry created by Barry Sharpless and Morten Meldal is based on the foundation of click chemistry, a type of chemistry in which molecular building blocks connect together quickly and efficiently.
Mr. Meldal is a Professor at the University of Copenhagen, whereas American Professor Sharpless works at Scripps Research.
Making complicated processes simpler is the theme of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2022. According to the academy, click chemistry and bioorthogonal reactions have propelled chemistry into the age of functionalism.
Click chemistry is used in the synthesis of medicines, DNA mapping, and the creation of more functional materials. Researchers have enhanced the targeting of cancer drugs by using bioorthogonal processes.
The Nobel committee gave the award to physicists Benjamin List and David WC MacMillan last year for discovering a clever and ecologically friendly method to create molecules that is “already tremendously helping humankind.”
Monday marked the beginning of the Nobel Prize announcements, with Swedish scientist Svante Paabo winning the prize in medicine for revealing Neanderthal DNA’s hidden information that was crucial to understanding our immune system.
Tuesday’s physics prize was shared by three experts. Small particles can maintain a connection with one another even after being separated, a phenomenon known as quantum entanglement, which can be used for specialised computing and to encrypt data. This was demonstrated by the Frenchman Alain Aspect, the American John F Clauser, and the Austrian Anton Zeilinger.
Thursday’s honours will focus on literature. The economics prize will be awarded on Monday, while the 2022 Nobel Peace Prize will be revealed on Friday.
The monetary awards for the prizes total 10 million Swedish kronor, or around $900,000. They will be distributed on December 10.
The funds originate from a donation made in 1895 by Alfred Nobel, a Swedish inventor who founded the award.
