SHS1 Students Report date in January 2024 – Parliament to Education Ministry

The Ministry of Education has been urged to reconsider the decision to allow first-year students of senior high schools (SHS) to report on Monday, December 4, 2023.

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban S. K. Bagbin, has proposed that the reopening date be shifted to the first week of January to allow both parents and teachers to prepare adequately.

The statement says, “The Parliament asked the Minister of Education to think again about the order from the Ghana Education Service that students, teachers, and others should start school on Monday, December 4, 2023.”

This has become necessary after the attention of the House was drawn to the directive by the GES for the commencement of academic work for the first-year students on Monday, December 4, 2023.

The Speaker has invited the Education Minister, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, to appear before the House on Monday, December 4, to brief the House on the reopening date and other matters.

The move follows a statement by the Member of Parliament (MP) for Akatsi North and Ranking Member on Education, Peter Kwasi Nortsu-Kotoe, on the apparent rush to allow the students to go to school on Monday.

The MPs, all from the minority side, expressed concern about the challenges that parents would have to go through between Thursday and Sunday to get their children ready to go to school on Monday which is SHS1 Students Report date.

Due to the short notice and its attendant inconvenience to students, parents, and teaching and non-teaching staff, the House proposes for the consideration of the Hon. Minister of Education the first week of January 2024, precisely January 2, 2024 be a more convenient and appropriate time for parents, students, and teachers to adequately prepare for academic work.

The MPs said it was incomprehensible that Computerized Selection of School Placement System portal was released for students just two days ago and that students were rushed to report on Monday.

The MPs said they have received calls from constituents for support and even to effect changes in their placement.

The MP for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, was emphatic that he has received calls from teachers expressing fatigue and asking that some time be given to rest before the SHS1 Students Report date.
