Latest Update on the strike action by UTAG| Shut universities until UTAG end strike – Vice-chancellors told
The Executive Director of Education Think Tank – Africa Education Watch, Mr Kofi Asare following the ‘not ending soon’ industrial action has called on Vice-chancellors to shut universities until the ongoing strike action is called off.
In a post sighted by EducationWeb, he said due to the cost of the social and economic cost it is unconscionable to keep newly admitted students who have not been matriculated for 5 weeks in school without any academic activity.
“It is unconscionable to keep freshmen who haven’t been matriculated in school for 5 weeks without any academic activity or direction. VCs should close down Public Universities until UTAG calls off strike,” Mr Kofi Asare noted
He said five weeks of the industrial action is yet to achieve any significant progress in negotiating a settlement to the impasse, consequently, it will be in the best interest of the student and their families for universities to be closed down.
But, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) for the Ministry of Education (MoE) Mr Kwasi Kwarteng has said no law compels government universities in the country to close down after 21 days of non-academic activity on campus.
His comment comes after local media reported it is possible government universities across the country might be closed amid the ‘not ending soon’ industrial action by the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG).
The spokesperson for the Education Ministry in a post sighted by EducationWeb said he is not aware of any law that forces government tertiary institutions to shut down after 21 days of no teaching and learning on campus.
“I am yet to cite any express provision in any University’s Statute that compels the closure of the school after 21 days of non-Academic activities. I will be glad to learn if your University’s statute provides otherwise,” Kwasi said on Tuesday.

The Minister of Education, Dr Adutwum in line with his outfit’s spokesman Monday also told Peace FM no law permits the Management of government universities to close down the institution after days of non-academic work.
