Some Educational policies in Ghana

Some Educational Policies introduced into Ghana’s Educational system has help in promoting good and quality education in the country.

The basic reasons behind the implementation of these policies is to ensure that each and everyone in the country is being given the good and quality education needed

There are numerous of Educational policies which has been introduced into the country.

In this article, we will be highlighting on the most existing policies in the country’s Educational system.

Free Compulsory Basic  Universal Education (FCBUE)

Free Compulsory Basic Universal Education was implemented in the year 2006 by New Patriotic Party led Kuffour government.

The objectives of the policy is to improve quality and efficiency in management of educational sector and improve full access to everyone of School going age in the country. Currently all Government basic schools are free and Compulsory.

 

School Feeding Program(SFP)

The School feeding program was introduced in the year 2006 with Free Compulsory Basic Universal Basic Education. The program was initiated in 2006 by the government of Ghana in Partnership with Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) and Dutch Government. The main goal of the School Feeding Program is to improve quality nutrition among pupils in public Basic Schools. Additionally, the program is aimed at helping families who struggle to meet their basic nutrition requirements.

Before this policy was implemented, many children from low income families do not attend school because there is no money to be given for foods and other needs. They rather follow their parents to farms whiles others also engage in trade.

This policy has increase enrollment and attendance in government basic schools.

 

Free Senior High School 

Free Senior High School policy was introduced in 2017.

As stated in Article 25 1b of the 1992 Constitution, “Secondary education in its different forms including technical and vocational education, shall be made generally available and accessible to all by every appropriate means, and in particular, by the progressive introduction of free education.”

The policy was introduced and implemented to make secondary education free in the country. In 2017, through the introduction of the policy, 27,000 students were enrolled. Children who are placed through the Computerized School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS) into Secondary, Vocational and Technical Schools are eligible to enjoy this policy.

Double track system was introduced in 2018/2019 academic year under the Free SHS policy to tackle issue of increase of students with limited facilities.

 

Inclusivity 

Inclusivity has been introduced in our Educational system to improve equality in Schools.

Inclusive education means giving equal opportunity to students irrespective of their physical, cultural and economic status. Inclusive education is the most effective way of improving and giving students equal chance to develop their skills and talents.

In inclusive environment, students who are physically challenged and disable are allowed to go to school without any intimidation, discrimination or stigmatisation from any entity.
