The WAEC, GES, and MoE will collaborate to organize the first BECE using the new curriculum, and candidates will most likely be writing 10 subjects. It will be prudent that the 2024 BECE starts on a Wednesday and not on a Monday. The 2024 BECE is projected to be administered in June 2024.
Mr. Wisdom Hammond, team lead at Ghanaeducation.org, made the suggestion during the Education-News Consult preparatory meeting for the 2024 BECE Home Mock introduced by the news portal.
“By starting the examination on a Wednesday, candidates will be better placed to write the examination by having rest and better preparation during the weekend and in between the papers” He stated.
“If the exam starts on a Wednesday, and two papers are written a day, they would have written 6 subjects by the end of Friday. Saturday and Sunday will be a rest day for these candidates. They can also use the weekend to do good revisions for the last set of four subjects.” He added.
The current BECE timetable, which ensures that candidates sit for the BECE from Monday to Friday without any rest days, is not the best.
It does not offer candidates any chance to rest and prepare well in between the subjects.

“If we are starting a new set of BECE in 2024, it will be a good decision to start the BECE on Wednesday and not Monday” he added.
Here are some of the benefits of starting the 2024 BECE on a Wednesday instead of a Monday:
- More rest for candidates: Candidates will have one more day to rest and prepare for the exams. This can be especially beneficial for candidates to revise more during the breaks and have rest as well.
- Reduced stress and anxiety: Having extra time to rest and prepare can help to reduce stress and anxiety levels in candidates. This can lead to better performance on the exams.
- Improved focus and concentration: Candidates who are well-rested are more likely to be able to focus and concentrate on the exams. This can lead to better accuracy and performance in the BECE.
- Increased motivation: Candidates who feel prepared and confident are more likely to be motivated to do well on the exams.
- Better overall performance: All of the above benefits can lead to better overall performance on the BECE. This can be beneficial for both candidates and schools, as it can lead to improved pass rates and higher grades.
- WAEC, GES, and MoE have nothing to lose if the BECE starts on a Wednesday.
“I believe that the benefits of starting the BECE on a Wednesday outweigh the challenges.” Mr. Hammond stated.
The call for the WAEC to Start 2024 BECE on Wednesday, is a call in the right direction.
