Striking teacher unions call off Strike

All teacher unions representing pre-tertiary teachers, namely the GNAT, NAGRAT, and the CCT-GH, have officially call off their strike action..
This strike was initiated due to grievances over what the unions characterized as substandard conditions of service.
The heart of the discontent was aimed at the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service (GES), the ministry’s executing agency, for their failure to improve the teachers’ conditions of service.
Among the critical issues raised by the unions were the lack of a proper Scheme of Service and Collective Agreement, arbitrary changes to the school calendar without consulting the teachers, issues in the distribution of laptops, and the blocking of some teachers’ salaries by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).
In the aftermath of the strike announcement, the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) and the National Labour Commission (NLC) both expressed their disagreement with the unions’ decision and called for a return to negotiation talks.
A breakthrough came on Tuesday, April 2, 2024, when the President of the Coalition of Concerned Teachers, Ghana, King Ali Awudu, issued a statement announcing the cessation of the strike.
He emphasized the unions’ adherence to legal and court directives and their ongoing respect for law and order as primary reasons for their decision.

Awudu urged all members and the wider community of pre-tertiary educators across the country to resume their duties immediately.
Furthermore, Awudu called on the Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations to initiate negotiation talks on the same day, underscoring the urgency of addressing the unions’ concerns.
The aim is to expedite the negotiation process to avoid future disruptions, highlighting a proactive step towards resolving the underlying issues that led to the strike action.
This move signals a hopeful pathway to improving the working conditions of teachers and ultimately, the quality of education in Ghana.
