Students severely molested by teachers for being late to Sunday service
Some students of Annor Adjaye SHS in the Western Region have been severely molested by teachers of the school for being late to school’s Sunday Church service. Must abuse of students through heartless caning be the only means of bringing students to Christ and the Cross on Sunday at school?
Is this how the church wants to win souls for Christ in our secondary schools? Must we harm students to convert them, or to preach Christ to them? Or we must show love and act with love to draw them to the Christian faith?
Is the school a slave camp or a place of learning and transformation? What are the churches and men of God saying about this matter? Do pastors and ministers of the Gospel cane their members who come to church late?
Students of Annor Adjaye SHS have been molested by some teachers of the school because the students were late for the Sunday church service on 8th May 2022 held in the school.
The molestation was first reported by the Human Rights Reporters Ghana (HRRG) an NGO championing the protection of the rights of people and those violated.
According to the report, the students numbering about 19 were caned mercilessly by the teachers who suspected that the students were reluctant to be present at the morning service.
Why should students be severely molested and treated like this by teachers for being late to church? Videos and pictures that have surfaced on the internet paint a sad picture and serious abuse of the students. Blood clots and marks showing severe caning can be seen on the entire body of some of the students. The students have complained of not being able to sit or lie down due to the pain.
Many of the students who suffered the inhuman treatment have left campus to seek medical attention. In an interview with Onua TV, the Programmes Director of Human Rights Reporters Ghana, Mr. Wisdom K.E Hammond disclosed that the HRRG received a distress call and made a follow-up on the matter. The HRRG has called on the Ghana Education Service, which abolished the use of canes in school in 2017 to take steps to ensure teachers who took part in the barbaric act are brought to book.

The Human Rights Reporters Ghana has also indicated that the alleged perpetrators of the inhuman act include the school’s head of the English department, the Assistant Head of academics, and one Senior Housemaster. These persons should know better and obey the GES policy on ban on canning and all forms of corporal punishment.
The Ghana Police and CHRAJ must all take up the matter. The HRRG has indicated its resolve to ensure that this human rights abuse is not swept under the carpet.

While it is important that students obey school rules and learn to be on time for school events, teachers must also know the limits enshrined in the code of conduct and policies of the GES and help them act within the confines of the law.

The behaviour of the teachers who severely molested the students must be of worry to all parents who have their wards in the various public SHSs. Now that this illegal act has become public knowledge, school authorities and persons who were part of this act need to be questioned. Students who are victims must be given medical attention at the cost of the government. The students need to be protected from any form of threat from the teachers.
There is nothing wrong with a sound caning for laziness, inattention, rudeness and stupidity. For more serious offences such as theft, bullying and violence, the thrashing should be given on the bare buttocks. I found the image that appeared with the article encouraging and hope you will desist from this ridiculous campaign to outlaw the most effective and apposite punishment available to teachers and guardians alike for the correction of errant children and youth.
We hope you are aware that the GES has banned canning in schools. That said, probably your ward may be at the receiving end of barbaric abuse soon.
