Low-lying residential areas and affluent neighborhoods alike have been devastated, exposing the city’s extreme vulnerability to seasonal flash floods.
Suburbs Submerged and Lives Lost
The impact has been catastrophic across primary zones of the Greater Accra Region:
- Alajo: Emergency workers confirmed the tragic recovery of an elderly man’s body from deep floodwaters. Two additional fatalities occurred in the neighborhood when rising water entered a home and triggered a fatal electrical short circuit.
- Tse Addo: Massive distress hit the area as entire sections, including Safari Homes, were completely cut off. In a dramatic rescue operation, emergency responders and local volunteers used small boats to safely evacuate an infant and 15 children trapped in rising waters.
- Main Roads: Swelling water levels completely submerged vital transport links, including the N1 Highway, Kaneshie, and Adabraka, leaving hundreds of morning commuters stranded.
Power Grid Emergency Shutdown
To avert widespread electrocution risks and safeguard the electricity grid, public utility operators initiated an emergency shutdown of key power infrastructure. Major regional primary substations were taken completely offline after floodwaters breached the compound walls. Engineering crews remain deployed on-site to assess infrastructure damage. Authorities maintain that power will only be restored once water levels recede fully and the grid is certified clean.
