Kylian Mbappe Agrees To Join Real Madrid

Paris St-Germain striker Kylian Mbappe has made the decision to join Real Madrid this upcoming summer transfer window.

The 25-year-old France captain has informed PSG of his intention to depart, with his contract set to expire in June. While Mbappe has yet to finalize a contract with Real Madrid, the announcement of the deal is expected after the conclusion of this season’s Champions League, where the clubs will not meet.

As PSG’s record goalscorer with 244 goals, Mbappe expressed his desire to resolve his future before March. On February 13, prior to training, he met with PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi to communicate his departure and impending move to Real Madrid.

Following reports of his departure surfacing last Thursday, Mbappe was excluded from the starting line-up for Saturday’s match against Nantes. However, he made an impact off the bench, converting a penalty as PSG extended their lead at the top of Ligue 1 by 14 points.

Reports suggest Mbappe will sign a five-year contract with Real Madrid, earning €15 million (£12.8 million) per season, along with a €150 million (£128 million) signing-on bonus to be dispersed over five years. Additionally, he will retain a percentage of his image rights.

Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti has already devised plans for Mbappe’s integration into the team, envisioning England midfielder Jude Bellingham in a deeper role, Brazilian Vinicius Jr. on the left, and Mbappe occupying the left of center position.

Should Croatia midfielder Luka Modric depart this summer, Mbappe would likely inherit the coveted number 10 shirt he currently wears for France.

In Champions League action, PSG holds a 2-0 advantage over Real Sociedad after the first leg of their last-16 tie, while Real Madrid leads RB Leipzig 1-0.

Which Shirt Number Will Mbappe Wear At Real Madrid?

There are not many options except the No. 9, a number more than symbolic for Los Blancos and previously worn by legends such as Alfredo Di Stefano.

It is the one that is free right now, although everything suggests that it could fall into the hands of the incoming Brazilian wonderkid Endrick, who will be working under Carlo Ancelotti next season once he turns 18.

Mbappe, however, does not wear the No.9 shirt with PSG nor with France. In Paris, he has worn No.7 since July 2018 after it was vacated by Lucas Moura: “It’s a legendary number, worn by great players,” Mbappe told the club’s website at the time

Kylian Mbappe To Real Madrid Hits Stumbling Block

Real Madrid’s pursuit of Kylian Mbappe faces a stumbling block in the ongoing negotiations over the player’s wage package. Despite an expectation at Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) that the 25-year-old will make the move to the Bernabeu, an agreement between the Spanish club and Mbappe remains elusive.

PSG, owned by Qatar, has presented an offer to retain Mbappe, but it is reported to offer only a marginal increase from his existing deal. The club is keen for Mbappe to stay but is unwilling to yield to potential financial demands, emphasizing a shift in their strategic direction.

Mbappe, on the other hand, appears to have made the decision to seek a new chapter in his career, but the offer from Real Madrid has not met his expectations or those of his entourage. Explorations into potential transfers to Liverpool or Arsenal have been made, but neither club is willing to compromise their wage structures to secure Mbappe’s services.

This situation leaves Mbappe with limited options, somewhat reminiscent of Lionel Messi’s situation at Barcelona. Real Madrid, in its efforts to recalibrate its approach over the last half-decade, has focused on developing younger players with initially lower contracts. This strategic shift was partly influenced by previous attempts to bring in Mbappe, only to be disappointed when he opted to remain at PSG in 2022.
