Teachers Strike Looms: NAGRAT Issues 14-Day Ultimatum Over Kade SHTS Assault, Hints Nationwide Strike

The National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) has issued a firm 14-day ultimatum to authorities, warning that teachers across the country may stage a nationwide sit-down strike if swift and decisive action is not taken following the assault of a teacher at Kade Senior High Technical School in the Eastern Region.

The ultimatum was delivered by the Eastern Regional Chairman of NAGRAT, Awoonor-Yevu Godwin, during a press briefing at the regional secretariat. He described the attack—captured in a viral video showing students physically assaulting a teacher on his way home—as “barbaric, shameful, and completely unacceptable.”

Godwin noted that unless the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana Education Service (GES) take immediate steps to arrest, prosecute, and ensure compensation for the victim, NAGRAT will “not hesitate to activate a nationwide industrial action” to protect the dignity and safety of teachers.

He warned that such a strike could significantly disrupt the 2026 academic calendar, stressing that teachers across the country are increasingly frustrated by the rising incidents of violence against educators. Recent cases in Ashanti, Eastern, Northern and other regions were cited as signs of a growing national crisis.

The association outlined several urgent expectations, including:

According to NAGRAT, teachers cannot continue to work under threats of violence, intimidation, and harassment—conditions they say are becoming increasingly common in schools.

Investigations Already Underway

NAGRAT confirmed that both the union and the GES Director-General have initiated independent investigations into the incident. The union commended the Director-General for his swift initial response but emphasized that only concrete judicial action will restore teacher confidence.

Call for Multi-Stakeholder Action

Godwin urged traditional leaders, the Ministry of Education, and security agencies to join forces immediately to address the growing threat against teachers. He stressed that educators, who are central to national development, deserve guaranteed safety and respect in all learning environments.
