Tertiary Education In Ghana Is Heading Towards Danger – NUGS Executives Write To Gov’t
The National Union of Ghana Students(NUGS), an institution that represents all students in the country has served a strong notice to the Akufo Addo-led government following the series of strikes actions taken by various tertiary workers unions. NUGS duty is to lobby on behalf of students and also make sure that the government is always providing necessities for Ghanaian students.
In a press statement released by the institution on social media, and signed by the Dennis Appiah Larbi, president of the institution, made it clear that Tertiary Education in the country is heading towards danger. According to them, they had a council meeting to consider the current state of the strike action in the various tertiary institutions.
Below are some reasons NUGS thinks that University Education is heading towards danger.
1. The continuous inability of the Ministry of Education to resolve the issues with the striking unions is fueling a growing unrest and frustration of students and the entire education system.
2. There are five educational workers who are currently on strike.
3. The consequences of these mass strikes actions is devastating with major academic and administration activities such as teaching, marking, transcript release, admission process, graduation processes affected. Tertiary education in Ghana has almost being brought to a halt.
4. Even more disheartening is the impact on private universities who are affiliated to various public universities, now unable to graduate students due to striking actions in the mentoring public universities who are to facilitate these processes.
5. The Ministry of Education and all other stakeholders must act with urgency to find an amicable resolution to the issues to prevent further disruption to the academic and educational structures.
6. Once again, we want to state clearly that the frustration and unrest is real and managers of the educational sector must be at least be concerned about the damaging impacts of these strike actions on the future of our country.
7. The union will continue to engage various stakeholders in our bid to solve the impasse.
