Today’s Quiet Time – Dec 6, 2022 (TUE) is titled David’s Testimony taken from Psalm 40:1-10
Scripture (NIV)
¹ I waited patiently for the LORD; he turned to me and heard my cry.
² He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand.
³ He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear the LORD and put their trust in him.
⁴ Blessed is the one who trusts in the LORD, who does not look to the proud, to those who turn aside to false gods.
⁵ Many, LORD my God, are the wonders you have done, the things you planned for us. None can compare with you; were I to speak and tell of your deeds, they would be too many to declare.
⁶ Sacrifice and offering you did not desire— but my ears you have opened— burnt offerings and sin offerings you did not require.
⁷ Then I said, “Here I am, I have come— it is written about me in the scroll.
⁸ I desire to do your will, my God; your law is within my heart.”
⁹ I proclaim your saving acts in the great assembly; I do not seal my lips, LORD, as you know.
¹⁰ I do not hide your righteousness in my heart; I speak of your faithfulness and your saving help. I do not conceal your love and your faithfulness from the great assembly.

Reflection
Declaring God’s Goodness (40:1–5)
The opening verses of this psalm are written in the style of a personal testimony. David speaks of what God has done in his life in response to his prayers and patient waiting. He was once stuck in a slimy pit of distressing circumstances, but God heard his cries and came to his rescue. In response to God’s salvation, David lifts up his voice and sings a new song that declares God’s goodness. Like David, we should also speak up and tell others of the great deeds God has done in our lives. He has pulled us out of the mire of sin and set our feet on the rock of His salvation. Let us proclaim to the world that there is no one like our God.
How do you share the stories of God’s goodness to the people around you? How have you seen your testimony bless others?
Offer Your Heart (40:6–10)
The psalmist moves on to consider how he should live to please the Lord who has granted him salvation. According to Mosaic Law, he must offer burnt offerings and sin offerings to God, but David understands that these religious rituals mean nothing unless they are given from a heart that is genuinely devoted to the Lord. God is pleased when His people desire to do His will, not out of obligation, but out of love for Him. As we offer our lives to God our Savior and faithfully obey His commandments, let us do so with joyful hearts, filled with gratitude for the wonderful things He has done for us.
What habits or disciplines help you to keep God’s Word within your heart? How can you grow in your desire to do God’s will?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank you for lifting me out of the quicksand of sin and giving me a firm place to stand. I give You my whole life—spirit, soul, and body—and pray that You would use me for Your glory. In Your name, amen.
