The 17.4 million bribes estimated to have been paid in Ghana in 2021 go to explain the lucrative nature of the illegality. The fact that many of these bribes and extortions are not reported and no one is punished emboldens the staff of these institutions to continue to engage in this act. The Ghana police which is supposed to be the implementor of laws rather breaks them with impunity through extortion and bribery.

The 17.4 million bribes eventually end in private and individual pockets at the expense of the government and the public.

According to the survey, people with the highest level of (tertiary) education were 1.6 times more likely to have paid a bribe than people with no formal education. Also, ten out of the 16 administrative regions recorded a prevalence of bribery higher than the national average. There are, however, sizable variations across the 16 regions of the country.
