University of Ghana Fee Hike: 2025/2026 Academic Fees Rise by Over 25%

Students and parents of the University of Ghana (UG) are raising urgent concerns following the release of the provisional academic fee schedule for the 2025/2026 academic year. The new data reveals substantial upward adjustments, with many students facing increments exceeding 25 percent across various colleges and programs.
While university management has not yet released an official statement justifying the sharp rise, the published schedules indicate that both freshers and continuing students will bear a significantly higher financial burden this year.
Detailed Fee Breakdown by College
The fee adjustments vary by department, but the trend shows a consistent spike across the university’s main academic hubs:
- College of Humanities: Level 100 students will now pay GH¢3,110, a staggering 34% increase from last year’s GH¢2,319. Continuing students in this college see a 27% rise, moving from GH¢1,777 to GH¢2,253.
- University of Ghana School of Law: Freshmen are required to pay GH¢3,226, representing a 33% jump from the previous GH¢2,435. Fees for continuing law students have climbed from GH¢1,890 to GH¢2,396.
- Other Colleges: The Colleges of Health Sciences, Education, and Basic and Applied Sciences have all recorded similar hikes ranging between 25% and 35%.
The Role of “Third-Party” Levies
A significant portion of the overall increase is attributed to a surge in third-party fees. In the 2024/25 academic year, these fees were pegged at GH¢255. However, for 2025/26, they have surged to GH¢767 for freshmen and GH¢455 for continuing students.
The breakdown of these compulsory third-party charges includes:
- SRC Hostel Development Levy: GH¢300
- 75th Anniversary Legacy Project: GH¢100
- SRC Welfare Dues: GH¢50
- Telecel Data Package (Freshers): GH¢312
- Reprographic Fees: GH¢5
Financial Strain and Student Agitation
The sudden introduction of these changes without prior notice has sparked widespread agitation within the student body. Many argue that the lack of justification from university authorities makes it difficult for families to plan for the upcoming semester.
Students are currently calling on the University of Ghana management to provide a transparent explanation for the hikes, warning that the current economic climate in Ghana makes such drastic increases nearly impossible for many to afford.
