UNIVERSITY OF PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND (UPEI) hosts 2023 international Asian Studies conference
The University of Prince Edward Island will host an international Asian Studies conference from June 22-23, 2023, in the Faculty Lounge, SDU Main Building.
The conference, titled “Mind and Mind Cultivation in Korean Philosophy and Religion: Buddhist, Confucian, Related, and Contemporary Perspectives,” is organized by UPEI’s Asian Studies and Korean Studies program in consultation with the American Philosophical Association (APA), the American Academy of Religion (AAR), and the North American Korean Philosophy Association.
The opening ceremony will take place on June 22 at 9:00 am, featuring speakers Dr. Greg Keefe, UPEI President and Vice-Chancellor (Interim); Dr. Young-Kyun Yang, Director of Korean Studies Promotion Service, the Academy of Korean Studies, Korea; and Dr. Greg Naterer, UPEI Vice-President Academic and Research.
Following the opening ceremony, Dr. Robert E. Buswell Jr., Distinguished Research Professor and Founding Director of the UCLA Center for Buddhist Studies and Center for Korean Studies, University of California-Los Angeles, will give the keynote speech, titled “Mind and Mind Cultivation in Korean Zen Buddhism.”
During the conference, fifteen prominent scholars from the United States, Korea, and Canada will present and discuss papers in five panels.
On June 22, presenters will give papers on and discuss “Korean Buddhism on Mind and Mind Cultivation: Textual & Practical”; “Buddhism and Related Topics on Self-cultivation: Modern Transformation, Women, and Dietary Practice”; and “Korean Confucianism on Mind and Mind Cultivation: Textual, Ethical, and Practical.”
On June 23, topics to be discussed will be “Confucianism on Mind and Mind Cultivation: Unorthodox, Comparative, and Contemporary Reflections” and “Philosophy and Religion in General: Comparative, Historical, and Cultural Perspectives.
