University Staff Strike Ends
Three major unions representing senior university staff in Ghana have called off their indefinite strike after the government took concrete steps to address their concerns. The Senior Staff Association of Ghana, the Technical University Administrators Association of Ghana (TUAAG), and the Federation of Universities Senior Staff Association of Ghana (FUSSAG) had jointly initiated the strike on Wednesday, May 21. Their decision came after months of frustration over the government’s delay in implementing a previously negotiated agreement meant to improve their working conditions.
Union leaders said they were compelled to strike only after exhausting every possible channel for dialogue. George Ansong, the National Chairman of the Senior Staff Association, described the strike as a last resort driven by repeated government inaction and neglect. “It was not an easy decision,” he stated, “but it became necessary in the face of persistent delays and the government’s failure to honour our agreement.”

However, in a new statement released on Thursday, May 22, the unions announced the suspension of the strike following what they called a “positive and timely” response from the government. The Ministry of Finance has now issued the long-awaited letter authorizing the implementation of the conditions-of-service agreement. This agreement is set to take effect from November 1, 2024.
Additionally, the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has given the green light for universities to begin immediate payments as outlined in the agreement.

Citing the government’s recent actions as a sign of good faith, the unions have instructed all members to return to work starting Friday, May 23. They expressed appreciation to the Minister of Education and Prof. Ahmed Jinapor Abdulai for their role in moving the process forward. The unions also thanked the media and their members for their ongoing support and solidarity throughout the standoff.
