WAEC Elects New Chairman of Council
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has ushered in a new era with the election of Prof. Thomas Brima Rick Yormah as its 21st Head Chairman of Council.
This landmark decision was made during the 72nd Annual Council Meeting, marking a pivotal moment for the organization dedicated to educational excellence across West Africa.
Prof. Yormah, taking the baton from Prof. Ato Essuman of the Republic of Ghana, was elected in a significant assembly held in the Republic of Sierra Leone, showcasing the collaborative spirit that WAEC embodies.
The week-long council meeting not only served as a platform for Prof. Yormah’s election but also celebrated WAEC’s 72nd anniversary, a testament to its enduring legacy in the realm of education.
Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio, represented by Vice President Dr. Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh, inaugurated the meeting with a keynote address that underscored WAEC’s critical role in shaping the educational landscape of the West African sub-region.
Through its seventy-two years of operation, WAEC has been at the forefront of educational reforms and standards, fostering a culture of academic excellence and integrity.
Conrad Sackey, Sierra Leone’s Minister of Basic and Senior Secondary Education, echoed these sentiments, highlighting WAEC’s significant contributions since its establishment in 1952.

The council’s dedication to maintaining educational standards and promoting sound education has been instrumental in inspiring a vision that transcends mere examinations.
This vision, as Minister Sackey noted, has spurred the sub-region’s countries toward recognizing the vast potentials inherent in their educational systems.
Amid the celebrations, WAEC also took the opportunity to honor academic excellence by conferring the WAEC International Excellence Award on three distinguished Ghanaian candidates.
These students, recognized for their outstanding performance in the WASSCE for school candidates in 2023, exemplify the academic prowess and dedication that WAEC seeks to cultivate across West Africa.
As Prof. Yormah steps into his role as Chairman, the message from the meeting was clear: the journey towards educational excellence is ongoing, and WAEC remains a pivotal force in that journey.
With calls to combat examination malpractice and uphold the integrity of public examinations, the council is set on reinforcing its mission to enhance education standards, ensuring that WAEC continues to be a beacon of excellence and a pillar of educational development in the sub-region for years to come.
