WAEC opens registration portal for BECE and WASSCE candidates
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has officially announced the opening of its registration portal for candidates of the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) and the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), marking a crucial step for students across the region in their educational journey.
During a press briefing, John Kapi, the Head of Public Affairs at WAEC, detailed the registration timeline and procedures for both examinations.
According to Kapi, the registration portal went live on Monday, March 11, 2024, and will remain accessible until Friday, April 19, 2024.
This period offers candidates a window to enroll for the upcoming exams, emphasizing the necessity of meeting this deadline to avoid missing out due to strict security and organizational protocols.

The BECE is scheduled to take place from Monday, July 8, to Friday, July 12, 2024, for both school and private candidates.
This year introduces a notable change in the examination framework, particularly for the BECE.
School candidates will be assessed based on the newly implemented common core curriculum, a move that aligns with educational reforms aimed at enhancing learning outcomes and relevance.
In contrast, private candidates will continue to be examined under the existing syllabus.
This bifurcation necessitates careful subject selection from private candidates to ensure compliance with the examination standards.
The briefing sessions conducted from February 20 to 23, 2024, were aimed at equipping all stakeholders involved in the registration process with the necessary information and guidelines to ensure a smooth and error-free registration period.
These sessions underline WAEC’s commitment to transparency and stakeholder engagement in its examination processes.
With a registration fee set at GH214.1 per candidate for the BECE, the Council urges all concerned parties, including students, parents, and educational institutions, to adhere strictly to the registration timeline.
Late entries pose logistical and security challenges and may not be accommodated, highlighting the importance of timely compliance with the registration procedures.
This announcement is a critical step for thousands of students across West Africa, setting the stage for their upcoming examinations.
It reflects WAEC’s ongoing efforts to uphold the integrity and standard of secondary education examinations in the region, ensuring that candidates are assessed in a fair and equitable manner.
