WAEC recieves additional ₵35m for 2024 WASSCE results release
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has received an additional GH₵35 million from the government through the Ministry of Education (MoE) to facilitate the release of the 2024 WASSCE for School results.
“The West African Examinations Council wishes to inform its stakeholders that on December 25, 2024, it received a cheque for an additional amount of GHC 35,000,000.00 from the Ministry of Education to enable it to complete the scanning of the objective answer cards and conclude the processing of results for the WASSCE for School Candidates, 2024.
Consequently, the Council is working round the clock to ensure the results are released by the end of the month.
Meanwhile, the Council is appealing to the Ministry of Education to release the outstanding balance to enable it to pay Supervisors, Invigilators, script checkers, and suppliers of examination materials and also meet other financial obligations.
The Council wishes all its stakeholders the Best of the Season and assures them of its commitment to the execution of its mandate despite the challenges,” the Head of Public Affairs at WAEC John Kapi said in a statement.
Meanwhile, the spokesman for the WAEC has cast doubt on the Council’s ability to meet the December 29 deadline for releasing the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for School results.
In an interview on Joy FM’s Midday news, the WAEC Head of Public Relations said the Council is facing significant challenges, primarily due to malfunctioning scanning machines used for processing objective answer cards.
He explained that only 45% of the work has been completed, with 55% still pending, adding that financial constraints hindering their progress.
The scanners are not working at full throttle. And so we would be glad if they release further funds for us to be able to, you know, fix, I mean, buy the parts, fix the machines, so that we can have more machines scanning, and the work can move on very fast. So this information, I am told, was made available to the minister.
Unfortunately, as I speak, we haven’t received any more funds, apart from the GH₵ 25 million we received on the 15th of December, 2024
Well, it’s four days to go. We have indicated the challenge we have is money. if it is made available for us, we will be able to get the machines working, we’ll recall all staff, and then all hands on deck. We are sure to be able to meet that deadline. But for now, I doubt if we can make it,” he stressed.
WAEC on August 5, 2024, commenced the administration of the 2024 edition of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for School Candidates and ended it on Friday, September 20, 2024.
A total of 460,611 candidates made up of 212,954 boys and 247,657 girls, presented by 1,003 second-cycle schools sat for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination administrated at 1,000 centres across the country.
