We are not quitting the strike until the needful is done – CATUM to GES
The Coalition of Aggrieved Teacher Union Members (CATUM) has sent a strong warning to the Ghana Education Service (GES). CATUM said, “We are not quitting the strike until the needful is done” in their press release copied to Ghana Education News.
The decision by CATUM was informed by the decision of the four teacher unions which was communicated to the country via a press release titled “Join press conference by the leadership of GNAT, NAGRAT, TEWU, CCT-GH on Monday 4th July 2022.”
According to the Coalition of Aggrieved Teacher Union Members (CATUM) members of the pre-tertiary unions remain resolute and firm in the strike action declared on 4th July 2022. It cautioned the teacher unions against any attempt to make a U-turn with regard to demands tabled.
It furthered that, the government has delayed placing a premium on the work of teachers and catering to their needs. Furthermore, it called on the government to give the teaching profession a listening ear.
The coalition also called on the unions to explain in detail what the 20% COLA covers, whether it is on a month-by-month basis or for some months.
“Leadership of CATUM and its members want to lay it straight to the authorities responsible for the declaration of the strike action that, members of the various unions demand a clearer explanation into the demand for 20% COLA indicating either it is for a single month or for some specific months in the year. This explanation is needed and must be made known to all members, as the cost of living keeps escalating every 24 hours. What usefulness then would the COLA be, assuming it is for a single month? We demand immediate explanations into the demands.”
The stand of CATUM that “We are not quitting the strike until the needful is done” resonated with all teachers.
