We have no hands in pricing of graves – Mortuaries CEO
“We have no hands in pricing of graves” – Mortuaries CEO Dr. Yaw Twerefour, the Chief Executive Officer of the Mortuaries and Funeral Services Authority, has responded to concerns surrounding the rising costs of graves, emphasizing that the Authority does not play a role in regulating prices.
In an interview on Accra-based Adom FM, Dr. Twerefour clarified that the primary responsibility of the Authority is to issue permits to cemetery owners, ensuring safety measures and necessary amenities within cemeteries. The Authority’s jurisdiction is centered around maintaining records and securing cemeteries, rather than influencing pricing structures.
Here is what the CEO said about pricing of graves
Dr. Twerefour underscored the lack of control over graves pricing, especially in privately owned cemeteries. When issuing permits, the Authority does not dictate pricing; instead, private owners determine the fees for their respective cemeteries.
Acknowledging the evolving dynamics in the funeral industry, Dr. Twerefour called for support from the Ghanaian community to effectively fulfill their responsibilities. Responding to reported increases in burial costs, callers from various regions shared their experiences, highlighting varying charges influenced by factors such as tiles, steps, and additional fees imposed by landowners and local councils. The conversation sheds light on the complexities of grave pricing and the challenges faced by both the Authority and the public in navigating this aspect of the funeral industry.
