Weija Dam Emergency Alert

Weija Dam Emergency Alert

Weija Dam Emergency Alert

Weija Dam Emergency Alert has being given as Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has announced the beginning of a controlled spillage at the Weija Dam and is urgently advising residents living downstream to evacuate to avoid potential disaster. The warning comes as water levels in the dam have reached 45 feet — dangerously close to the maximum operating level of 47 feet — due to the heavy rains that have started the season.

In a statement released on Friday, 23 May, GWL explained that the controlled release is a preventive measure aimed at protecting the structural safety of the dam and the lives of those in the vicinity. “To safeguard the integrity of the Weija Dam and prevent any disaster, we have commenced minimal spillage,” the statement said.

Residents living in downstream communities such as Tetegu, Oblogo, Pambros Salt, Lower McCarthy Hill, Lower Weija, Bojo Beach, Adakope, and nearby areas are particularly at risk. GWL is urging people in these locations to relocate immediately to safer, higher ground. The statement emphasized the importance of following all safety directives from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and other emergency services.

The company also appealed to the Ga West Municipal Assembly to assist in clearing refuse and silt from the estuary and river channels to ensure an unimpeded flow of water into the sea. This, they say, is essential for minimizing the risk of flooding during the spillage period.

“We are urging residents in the affected areas to cooperate fully with the authorities,” the statement read. “Following safety instructions and evacuating promptly can make a significant difference in avoiding injury, loss of life, or property damage.”

GWL underscored that public cooperation is essential to avoid repeating past flood disasters, where dam overflows caused significant destruction. As rains continue and water levels rise, the call to action is clear: evacuate now, stay alert, and stay safe.
