Well explained 2023 Basic and SHS academic calendars which commence 10th January

The 2023 Basic and SHS academic calendars commence tomorrow, 10th January 2023 across the 16 regions of Ghana per the directive of the Ghana Education Service (GES).

In Basic schools, 10th January will mark the start of the first term while in SHS and TVETS, it will be the beginning of the first semester.

The 2023 academic year will be the 3rd school year that has started in January instead of September as a result of Covid-19, which hit the world in March 2020 and compelled the government of Ghana to close down schools to protect the population.

The Ministry of Education has indicated that when the 2023 academic year starts, there will be no double tract at the SHS.

It furthered that only two-year groups of the three cohorts of students in senior high school (SHS) will be in school at any given time. “In the transitional option, two of the three-year groups must be in school at a given time,” it said.

One of the key decisions that led to the above decision for SHS and TVET schools is to prevent congestion and maintain social distancing so that COVID-19 can be prevented from spreading.

2023 Basic and SHS academic calendars

Final Year SHS and TVET schools Semester 1

SHS and TVET schools are expected to start Semester 1 of the 2023 academic year from 10th January 2023 to February 17, 2023. This will be followed by a break

that takes effect from February 18 to March 12. The students will then report to school from March 13 to June 2 to complete the first Semester.

When is the Final Year SHS and TVET Students Semester 1 break?

The Final Year SHS and TVET schools’ Semester 1 break is from June 3 to 18.

When will the second semester start for SHS and TVET schools?

Students will be expected to return to school for the second semester from June 19 to September 28, 2023.

Semesters 1 and 2 for SHS2 and TVET 2 students

Semester 1 starts from January 10 to March 9.

First-semester Break is from March 10 to April 21. They will break from April 24 to June 2

However, the students will return to school from June 3 to August 6, 2023, to complete the first semester.

The second semester will be from August 7 to December 22, this year.

Form 1 students Semester 1 and 2 details

The first semester starts from February 20 to April 21, 2023.

The students are expected to break from April 22 to June 18, 2023.

They will return to school to continue the semester from June 19 to August 4 then break from August 5 to October 1, 2023.

Semester Two is expected to start on October 2 for SHS1 and TVET1 students and end on December 22, 2023.

Single track SHSs semester 1 and 2

Semester 1:  SHS Three students will report to school (boarders) from January 10 to May 11, 2023, and then go on break from May 12 to June 2, 2023.

The students will return to school from June 5 to September 29 and will be required to take their West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) within the period.

Semester 1: SHS Two students start Semester 1 on January 10 to May 11, 2023.

They will have a break from May 12 to June 2. Their second semester starts on June 5 and ends on October 9, 2023.

Semester 1:

SHS1 students are expected to be in school for semester 1 from January 20, 2023, to May 11, 2023, break from May 12 to June 2, and return to school for the second semester from June 5 to November 10, 2023.

BASIC SCHOOLS CALENDAR DETAILS

At the basic school level, pupils will go to school for the first term from January 10 to April 20, 2023 (14 weeks) and break from April 21 to May 1, 2023.

The second term resumes from May 2 to August 9, 2023, and then breaks from August 10 to August 21, 2023.

The third term will be from August 22 to November 16, 2023.
