What Does 4th Dec 2023 Reporting Day for SHS1 Students Mean?

As parents and students wait for their placement, we need to understand what it means when GES says SHS1 students will report to school on Dec. 4th. The answers and explanations provided in this post are based on experience and what the GES does each year after releasing the placement for BECE candidates.

What Does 4th Dec 2023 Reporting Day for SHS1 Students mean?

The general public recognizes the reporting date as the day students will begin their academic work according to the GES’s 2023–2024 academic calendar.

However, that understanding is not entirely accurate. The December 4 reporting date refers to the date from which all BECE graduates who have been placed in an SHS can start visiting the school to confirm their placement in the school and also pick up the school prospectus and complete the initial registration and enrolment process.

When you report on December 4, the school you have been placed in will provide you with the date on which academic work will commence as well as the date on which SHS1 students will commence academic work.

Given that all secondary schools will break for the Christmas and New Year festivities on December 21st, BECE graduates will spend less than three weeks in school when they start semester 1. There are three weeks between December 4th and December 21st. Students are likely to complete their enrollment processes by December 8th and may be expected to report to school from December 8th to December 11th. Thus, academic work is likely to start on Monday, December 8th.

The late release of the school placement may compel the GES to extend or postpone the reporting date for students, which will also impact the dates when academic work will start.
