The Man involved in Paul Pelosi `s Assault
A Canadian Man Convicted of Assault and Attempted Kidnapping Faces Prison Term for Brutal Assault on Paul Pelosi Family.
In a gripping legal saga that unfolded at the Phillip Burton Federal Courthouse in San Francisco, a jury has found David DePape guilty of assaulting and attempting to kidnap former US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s husband, Paul Pelosi. The incident, which occurred on October 28 of the previous year, left the 83-year-old victim hospitalized for six days with a fractured skull and other injuries.
DePape, The Man involved in Paul Pelosi `s Assault, a Canadian citizen residing in the US for two decades, tearfully apologized for the attack during his Tuesday testimony. The gravity of the charges against him, including assault and attempted kidnapping of a federal official, could result in a substantial 50-year prison sentence.
As the week-long trial concluded on Thursday, DePape received the unanimous guilty verdict from the jury. Throughout the proceedings, he maintained a solemn demeanor, keeping his eyes down and fidgeting with his fingers as the verdict was read aloud.
The chilling attack was captured on video, revealing DePape breaking into the Pelosi home with a hammer. Once inside, he inquired about Mrs. Pelosi, who, fortunately, was not present at the time. Responding to a 911 call from Mr. Pelosi, officers arrived to find both men gripping a hammer. When ordered to drop the weapon, DePape swung the hammer at Mr. Pelosi before being subdued by officers, as depicted in body camera footage presented in court.

FBI special agent testimony revealed that the footage showed the man striking Mr. Paul Pelosi three times during the assault. In his own account, Mr. Pelosi recounted DePape’s alarming statement during the attack, expressing his intention to “take out” Mrs. Pelosi, referring to her as “the leader of the pack.”

Despite DePape’s court-appointed lawyer, Jodi Linker, arguing that her client was motivated by right-wing conspiracy theories, prosecutors contended that the assailant was executing a “plan of violence.” DePape’s possession of zip ties and duct tape at the time of his arrest, along with statements indicating a “target list” and plans to hold Mrs. Pelosi captive, reinforced the prosecution’s case.
Now facing up to 20 years for attempted kidnapping and an additional 30 years for assault on a federal official’s family member, DePape is also confronting separate state charges, including attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, and residential burglary. If convicted on these more serious charges, he could face life in prison.
In a statement from Mrs. Pelosi’s office, her husband was praised for demonstrating “extraordinary composure and courage” throughout the legal proceedings. As the state proceedings unfold, the statement affirms Mr. Pelosi’s ongoing recovery, emphasizing that no further comments will be made.
US Attorney Ismail Ramsey, speaking outside the court, emphasized the importance of the verdict, stating that regardless of political beliefs, physical attacks against members of Congress or their families will not be tolerated. The outcome of this trial sends a clear message that justice prevails in protecting public figures and their loved ones from acts of violence.
